Where creativity finds its flow
In a hide away music studio in the heart of Aarhus, Nicolai has created a space that’s more than just a workplace. Known as Rummed—a Danish word meaning “The Space”—this creative hub is a haven where musicians meet for late-night sessions. For Nicolai, who is a composer, producer, engineer, and musician, the studio is a labor of love, meticulously designed to nurture creativity and foster a sense of ease.

The Space to create
“This studio is called Rummed. It’s about creating a space where people can dive into the creative process,” Nicolai explains. “It’s more than the music—it’s about the vibe, the lighting, the food, the plants, and the overall environment. It all matters.” Nicolai knows firsthand how much the setting impacts the music-making process. Deadlines often loom, with clients demanding polished tracks that sound as effortless as songs that took years to craft. Amid such pressures, the studio’s atmosphere provides a crucial counterbalance, allowing artists to relax and find their flow.

A studio that never sleeps
In Nicolai’s world, day and night blend together as creative sparks dictate the rhythm. “Sometimes, you have to stay in the moment until it’s done,” he says. “If you leave an idea, it might disappear forever.” Late-night sessions are a regular occurrence at Rummed, whether Nicolai is engineering for artists, mixing tracks, or cleaning up after long recording days.
Comfortable furniture is essential, especially the studio’s trusty sofa bed. “The sofa isn’t just a piece of furniture—it’s where artists write, wait, and rest,” Nicolai shares. “Sometimes they nap between sessions or even stay overnight. It’s essential for the creative process that the artists stay at the studio.”
The sofa as a studio essential
“The sofa bed’s practicality extends beyond comfort—it keeps the creative team together and the process seamless. “When you’re working on something, it’s important to stay in the flow,” Nicolai explains. “If an artist leaves, they might lose the creative spark. Having the sofa means they can take a break but still stay in the environment. It’s also great for artists traveling from afar—they can sleep here and head to the station the next morning.” In a space that juggles recording, photo shoots, and late-night jam sessions, the sofa bed has become as indispensable as the coffee machine. “Those two things are the heart of the studio,” Nicolai jokes. “The sofa, in a way, is like a machine—it has a function. It’s a place to write, rest, and recharge.”

Music and beyond
Rummed’s central location makes it a go-to spot for visiting artists, especially during events like the NorthSide Festival. Nicolai recalls moments when international collaborations happened on the fly, fueled by the studio’s welcoming environment. “Sometimes artists meet at festivals and decide to collaborate right after their shows. They come here, and we work through the night.” Nicolai is also exploring new creative outlets, such as photography, but music remains his anchor. “It’s been everything for me,” he reflects. “Even when it became tough as a career, I found my way back to the passion that started it all.”

A space that reflects its creator
Nicolai’s journey as a musician and producer mirrors the emotions of his studio—an embrace of hard work, creativity, and resilience. “Life shapes you, even the tough parts,” he says. “The bad things that happen can lead you to exciting places.” Rummed isn’t just a studio; it’s a testament to the creative spirit—a place where ideas come to life, connections are made, and the rhythm of music continues, day and night.
