Denim Couture Collection
13 January 2011
The Denim Couture Collection is a joint project of London-based Papillon Design and Innovation.
Papillon Design are Joelle Talmasse and Martyn Gayle, a creative couple with a common mission of bringing couture into interior design. Together with Innovation they have created a dual collection, including both limited edition couture pieces and commercial items. The collection will be presented at the imm cologne fair in January 2011, where you can meet Papillon Design and see how a new design is created.
VINTAGE DENIM REINVENTED
Papillon Design has been working with denim for the last three years, combining this timeless fabric with exclusive materials like leather skins, crystals and jewellery.
Two years ago they unearthed an 'Aladdin's Cave' of 1970's vintage denim, reviving long forgotten brands such as Rally, Smak, Hoofer and Hardcore that make the couture designs even more special. Each item of the couture collection is made entirely by hand.
This original mix of materials and decorative elements create unique contemporary interior design pieces. Joelle elaborates: "We like the idea of combining snow wash and other denim washes, not in a forensic way, as we are not connoisseurs, but in a playful way and with a nod to rock 'n' roll."
To make the Papillon concept more accessible we invented 'Serial Unique', where you can get your favourite pair of jeans integrated in a denim cover or a beanbag. This allows everybody to take the denim couture idea home at a reasonable price. The concept combines mass production with handmade details that make every piece unique. Serial Unique includes two covers as well as two Jeanbags™, all inspired by the original couture designs.
Joelle and Martyn looked at the heritage of Innovation and learned that the beanbag now know as Player was how it all started back in 1971. Martyn explains: "We decided to utilise Innovation's heritage and came up with the Jeanbag™, using vintage denim and beautiful leather skins from Italy." The Jeanbag™ is both available as couture and Serial Unique versions.
We will keep you inform about the Serial Unique designs that should be out in the shops this spring.
